Whenever I teach PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) they have me do the death and nurse interaction part of the course and I use that story for the "good" in the "saying goodbye beautiful-saying goodbye ugly" part of the lecture. Even gets the hard-ass doctors & other instructors crying.
It was really a touching scene. The family approached us about withdrawing support. Usually you have to bring it up to them first. They had it well thought out...... who they wanted from the staff in the room, where the whole family (about 15 of them) would be in the room, where the parents would sit, etc. The parents sat in chairs and the family formed a semi-circle around them. We moved the baby into mom's arms and then disconnected the vent & turned off the medications keeping him alive. Without saying a word, they all started singing that song when the heart rate went down to 50 (which must have been the "magic number" they decided on before hand.....I never asked them about it). A couple of the othe staff members had to bail out of the room it hit them so hard. I am pretty "hard core" and stone faced when there is a job to do like that, but even I had the water works going. Like I said...... it was the most beautiful and touching end of life situations I have ever been part of.
I have to mention the ugly........ there are 2 that I remember as being tied for the ugliest.
One was a divorced mom & dad (mom was willing to remove life support). 10 year old boy and as he was almost gone, the dad just started being a complete ass and cursing and arguing with the mother. Almost had to take him out of the room.
The other one was an older Hispanic couple whose baby just could not be saved. The Grandparents kept telling the parents it was their fault for some previous "family sin" they committed and God was punishing them. I banned the grandparents from the room with the parent's permission so they could do it in peace.
Just had to give the story.......

I guess we all think of the old saying..."we will see them in heaven"...But I am sorry.... I wouldn't want to wait...I would want to be with them while they were on earth in the best terms and the best health, and share all the wonderful memories I have so far with my children. I remember those days going to the family after working a code all the way to the hospital with 6 of us in the back of the ambulance, doing CPR, defib, bolus's of eppie down the ET tube etc...killing your back and sweating a heck of alot....all to come to the er code room to have a Dr. walk in the room and say ... "call it".....So aggravating and depressing. And having to walk out by the grieving room and hear the anguish of the family members being told we did what we could but we lost them. I tell you.....In the medical field in any job from the first responder to the surgeon and higher, you have to deal with alot of stress every day and have to be able to be understanding, thoughtfull, and tactful when dealing with a grieving family, no matter how they react in a time of crisis....I know because i have been there.....and my hat is off to a guy like DocWarren who gets up every day hoping that he can help make a difference in peoples lives, and knowing that sometimes things happen for a reason and we have to learn to accept that and hold on to what we have, and I'm glad i can still call him (as well as others in NB) My extended "Family"

Keith Whitley gots a heap of sad songs! It's not on Youtube but he does "Would these arms be in the way"- great sad song. Brook I just can't say enough about your contribution to society. I simply couldn't handle it. When my daughter got her tonsils out they gave her "goofy juice" and just seeing her on that made me feel terrible. It's like "man, that's not my kid! I want my kid back!"
