Well even though i was heading for an academic "Research and Development" career, within the first year of my degree, i realised i had a problem with authority and being told what to do and got bored too easily doing one thing. So being my own boss is what i want in a job. Thats why i became a builder/property developer. I know one summer i did factory work in an electronics company, omg i could have died, the same thing for like 10hrs, im sorry but my mind is too creative fast and active for that. The advantages of property developer... live in the work place if not too run down high pay be own boss donuts whenever i want most secure job ever.. people will always need places to live. varying things to do.. not doing same thing all the time eg. decorating, plumbing, landscaping, roofing, plastering, bricking, carpentry etc. disadvantages very hard work all to think about if doing it all yourself, doing job of 30 people problem neighbours dangerous but i think the main thing you should look for is if u enjoy it.. u r going to spend the rest of your life doing it might as well enjoy it.

i will agree with brighty the main thing you need in a job is satisfaction , if you like doing the job you are getting paid for fun ;D ;D , as with me i get paid to drive and thats my love ;D as for job security if you are good at what you do theres no probs and other companies will try and poach you with more money benifits etc, but i think loyalty to a employer is also a priority for me , and when you need to call on them they do remember, as with me with my accident i had 2 months off and they still gave me full pay instead of statutory sick pay (which is peanuts) . self employed is good but hard work i owned my own business for 17 yrs , no days of sick as no pay, staff problems, etc, my day was taken up doing mostly paperwork and working 18hr days no social life at all , so 2 yrs ago i sold up got a job 2 days later and never looked back only work 12 hr days for more money no stress i just clock in clock out and come home to ET ;D sry for the essay best DMC

I think being your own boss, loving what you do, and having all the variety you could ever want are all very good things to have. All of these things that you guys have said are very true and to have them in this difficult system that we live in are a real blessing. I've been a automotive mechanic for 15 years and a gas turbine mechanic for ten years and now run my own automotive shop. I love the challenges that they bring, but I could never ask for anything more than to be able to spend the time with my family and friends that I am able to do. The philosophy that I try to live by, but fail to do a lot of the time is................. "Don't take life so seriously, no one makes it out alive anyway"

Go for anything that doesn't involve putting on womens underwear or a dress. Then again...curiosity killed the cat!. lol jk. Go for something that you enjoy and get high income for low labor.

interesting thread. my advice is do whatever makes you happy.. and don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something.. man i hate that.... i had an english /poetry teacher once tell me i would never get my poems published. well, you know what, i got that book published. book of poems and ramblings called : the bohemian scribblings, pm' me if ya want to know where to get one at. too often too many people come in to work miserable.. man, negativity loves company ... if you're miserable.. find another line of work and stop bringing down all the happy hobbits that dwell there. i've quit jobs on the 1st day and stuck w/ others for years. sure pay and benefits and all that jazz are important.. but equally important, is job satifaction, vacation and personal time, family time, time for self.. the way i see it is... would you still do the job you're doing now if you had a few million dollars in the bank..? if no.. then what line of work would you be in ? i would pay my way to the leader of a political party and become president of the uk and sort out the uk and world and turn it into a utopia where money is of no value, people are more likely to make selfless choices than selfish ones and we all work together to help each other.

Do something you really like and fine a company that will invest in your future, training you to do a better job within the company also increases your value to the company. So you all benefit and you never get stuck in a deadend job. I voted better benefits with training as a benefit. Damn I'm getting too seriuos You will probaly find you will get everything else with such a company, even donuts. If you find a company like that let me know ;D

Some people need that much money to stay happy for some reason. Ace

My wife hasn't worked full time since 2002 so she could stay home with the kids. I have since trained my boy to tell everyone, "My dad has to go to work so he can make money so my mom can spend his money and she really needs to get a job." All I have to do is say "tell them why daddy has to work" and he repeats it every time. I know....... I'm just pure evil. ;D doc
